Over
the years, I have found that there are so many extraordinary words that
begin with the letter "C". It's not that other letters don't have amazing
words, but using words beginning with the letter "C", as a guide to
action, can open the door to making positive changes both professionally
and personally.
Choice
We all
have the ability to make choices. Recognize that you have choices instead
of allowing someone else to make them for you.
For example, if you have a constant influx of phone calls and
interruptions from clients, managers or associates who need something from
you "right now", you can choose how you respond.
First and foremost: Determine your options.
Do you take the "need it right now" at face-value or do you ask
questions and find out why there is a rush for it? Do you find an
appropriate place to stop what you are currently working on or abruptly
stop what you are doing knowing you shouldn't stop? Do you look at the
tasks you want to get done that day and adjust your schedule? Taking this
step frees your mind of other items pending on your to do list.
You
have choices.
*Choose how you react
*Choose to make improvements or stay status quo
*Choose to take responsibility
Control
Determine the power you have over your circumstances. Do you have
the control to make changes? Want to change jobs, lose weight, exercise
more, spend more time with your family, take more time for yourself, or
get a promotion? Keep your thoughts directed on what you want -- thoughts
and attitude can make the difference between success and failure.
For example, instead of asking, "When do you need this by", suggest to
someone, "I can get this to you XXX day...will that work?"
Here are two wonderful quotes to help illustrate the point:
"It's essential to distinguish between events that are really beyond
your control and events you caused yourself." Barbara Sher
"You don't get to control any outcome, only every choice you make along
the way." Stephen C. Paul
Commitment
First
and foremost, make a promise to yourself. Your obligation is to you.
Without a genuine commitment to achieve a result -- you will find yourself
trying. Trying is nice but it's an escape route from making something
happen. Do more than just try, make the commitment!
Change
Make
changes to what you are currently doing by taking action - small, doable,
next steps! Without action, you are not going anywhere.
Consistency
Allow
processes of improvement, achievement and change to not only happen but to
succeed by establishing consistency in your habits and routines.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a
habit." Aristotle
Creativity
Dare
to find alternatives to the conventional -- look to your
imagination.
Can-Do
A
can-do approach will get you to achieve and see results. Say YES!
These
seven "C's" are compelling words that can lead to powerful results. You
have the power. Take an opportunity and give yourself a chance ... a
little time ... See? You can do it!
